Tesla's World's First Ultra-large Die-casting Machine Has Been Built And Tested

IDRA Group has announced the completion of construction and testing of the Giga Press, a 9,000-ton die-casting machine for the Tesla Cybertruck.

The 900-ton Giga Press is the world's first ultra-large die-casting machine and the largest auto-body die-casting machine. It consists of 54 sections of major components.

IDRA says it is the first company to receive an order for a 9,000-ton die-casting machine for small trucks/SUVs. Initially, it "seemed impossible" to produce these machines, but today, IDRA's 900-ton Giga Press delivery is on schedule.

According to Teslarati 7, the equipment left Italy in September and arrived in Houston, Texas, on the 28th of the same month.

The Tesla Texas Super Factory is located in Austin, and the Giga Press will be delivered by road to Austin after arriving at the port of Houston. The Giga Press will then be assembled and tested in the Texas facility and will be used in the Cybertruck body build once completed.

Tesla originally planned to mass produce the Cybertruck, the company's first electric pickup truck, from late 2021 to late 2022. However, Tesla has already indicated in its first quarter earnings report this year that progress has been made in the industrialization of the Cybertruck, which will be produced at the Texas super plant.

In addition, IDRA has previously supplied multiple 6,000-ton die-casting machines for Tesla's Model Y at its Shanghai, Berlin, and Texas super factories. According to the information announced by Tesla, after adopting one-piece die-casting technology, the 80 pressed and welded parts of the original Model Y can be integrated into one casting, and achieve a 40% cost reduction and 10% weight reduction.

With the new energy vehicles on the weight reduction and efficiency claims to see the long, structural parts integration is also enhanced, the integrated die-casting trend continues to be verified.

From the industrial application level, super large die-casting is the key iterative direction for future enterprises to establish moat, and large die-casting machines wants to do well, it is necessary to do a good job of grinding tools, die-casting mold is the most important, the current global design of oversized mold are not enough experience to follow, the future mold and casting market will be promising.
