Tesla's next Gigs factory site finalized
On Tuesday local time, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said that Tesla will soon announce "good news" in Mexico. He said in a social media post that he had met with Rohan Patel, Tesla's senior global director of public policy and business development, and Eugenio Grandio, director of business development and policy for Latin America, and that "more good news is coming. Mexico's president said last week that two local sites are ready for potential Tesla factories.
In recent years, Tesla has been looking for a site for its next megafactory. There have been rumors that the company is looking for suitable sites in Canada, South Korea, Indonesia, India, Thailand and Mexico. But in recent months, news has been swirling that Tesla is considering building a factory in Mexico. in October 2022, Tesla CEO Musk visited the northern Mexican state of Nuevo León, which borders the U.S. state of Texas. After that, news emerged that Tesla might build a factory in Mexico. Then, earlier in December 2022, Ebrard revealed that Musk had visited candidate sites for a new factory in three Mexican states. in late January 2023, we reported that Tesla was in talks with the northern Mexican state of Nuevo León about a potential factory, but no final agreement was reached between the two parties.
That report came shortly after news that the company was also considering building a factory near Mexico City's Felipe Angeles International Airport. Earlier this year in February, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard had revealed that Tesla was expected to announce its investment in Mexico soon. The Mexican government has been working with Tesla to help the latter find a location in Mexico to build a factory. It was revealed that Tesla has already visited several locations. On Tuesday, local time, Ebrard issued a tweet thanking Rohan Patel, Tesla's senior global director of public policy and business development, and Eugenio Grandio, Tesla's director of business development and policy for Latin America, for their visit and said there will be more good news soon.
Tesla currently has " Giga factories" in four main locations around the world: Fremont, California, USA; Shanghai, China; Austin, Texas, USA; and Berlin, Germany. Analysts estimate that Tesla will need to build seven to eight more " Giga factories" in the future to meet Musk's goal of selling 20 million electric cars by 2030.
