Indonesia strikes deals with Tesla, BYD on production facilities

On Jan. 17, Reuters reported that Indonesia finalized agreements with electric car makers Tesla and BYD to invest in electric car production facilities in Indonesia, a senior cabinet minister said.

Indonesia has rich nickel resources, they used to be a nickel exporting country, and to ensure that they can provide enough raw materials to investors, Indonesia has now banned the export of nickel ore. For this reason, Indonesia is actively promoting domestic investment in batteries and electric vehicles.

"Tesla, BYD, Hyundai, etc., the world's largest electric car makers who are going to invest here, they are all finalizing agreements with Indonesia," said Luhut Pandjaitan, Indonesia's coordinating minister, at a meeting with provincial governments. But he did not give more details about the agreement.

On Jan. 12, Reuters reported that Tesla was in talks with Indonesia about building a production facility in the country, the results of which have not been announced so far.

The joint venture between SAIC, General Motors Corp. and Wuling Motors Holdings, SGMW Motor Indonesia, established its first plant on August 20, 2015 at the Greenland International Industrial Center in Cikarang, Regency of Bekasi, West Java. The model currently on sale is the Air ev.

In March 2022, Hyundai established their first plant in Southeast Asia at the Deltamas Industrial Complex located near Cikarang, Indonesia, for the production of the IONIQ 5 for sale in that country.
